Enugu State approves ₦32 billion to settle retiree gratuity arrears

The Enugu State Government has approved approximately ₦32 billion to settle outstanding legacy gratuities owed to retired workers. An initial payment of ₦10 billion is scheduled to begin next week. Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, stated that the funds were included in the 2026 budget approved by the State House of Assembly as part of Governor Peter Mbah’s commitment to clearing inherited liabilities.

In a coordinated effort, the Enugu State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) announced that local government councils will also begin paying arrears dating back to 2000. Starting in October, councils will dedicate 10 percent of their monthly allocations to settling these decades-old debts. This move aligns with the state government's policy to alleviate hardship for retirees who served at both state and local levels.
