Enugu State deploys health fellows as undercover monitors

The Enugu State Government, working with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has launched the second cohort of the National Health Fellows Programme. During a ceremony at the Enugu International Conference Centre, the state graduated the inaugural set of fellows and welcomed new inductees.

Governor Peter Mbah announced that these fellows are authorized to act as undercover monitors to improve primary healthcare delivery. Their mandate includes visiting healthcare facilities to identify service gaps, exposing staff absenteeism, and holding local government health administrators accountable. The initiative aims to address systemic issues across the state’s 260 electoral wards, ensuring that health workers are present and performing their duties.

Commissioner for Health Prof. George Ugwu stated that the new fellows will be integrated into the state’s broader healthcare expansion plans to improve data accountability and service monitoring.
