Enugu State funds World Bank livestock project with N60 million

The Enugu State Government has announced new measures to support the World Bank-assisted Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project. To demonstrate commitment to the initiative, the state has approved an initial N60 million counterpart contribution.

A central component of the project is the establishment of an Integrated Livestock Development Centre located along the Ubahu-Amankanu axis in the Nkanu East Local Government Area. This facility is planned to include a ranch with a 15,000-cattle capacity, automated meat-processing facilities, and climate-smart irrigated pastures.

To ensure the project's success, authorities are focusing on conflict management and disease prevention. Commissioner for Agriculture Dr. Patrick Nwabueze emphasized the need for biosecurity and early warning systems to mitigate crises that could undermine investment. Training programs have been initiated for livestock farmers, conflict mediation committees, and other stakeholders to promote sustainability and community ownership. The project's interventions extend to various areas, including Nkanu East, Enugu South, Udi, Awgu, and Nsukka.
