Enugu State Government Reaffirms Commitment to HIV/AIDS Response
The Enugu State Government in Nigeria reaffirmed its dedication to combating HIV/AIDS, announcing the pledge during a meeting between Health Commissioner George Ugwu and the executive members of the Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN) Enugu Chapter. Ugwu highlighted Governor Peter Mbah’s priority to ensure no resident is excluded from essential health services and detailed ongoing reforms, including the construction of Type‑2 Primary Healthcare Centres in every ward and expanded access to quality care.
He also noted improvements in disease surveillance, health‑workforce development, and partnerships with development agencies to boost HIV testing, treatment, prevention of mother‑to‑child transmission, and viral‑load monitoring. Public‑health education and community‑engagement initiatives are being intensified to curb new infections and reduce stigma. NEPWHAN state coordinator Lilian Agbo praised the ministry’s efforts and called for deeper collaboration to further advance community‑based interventions and support for people living with HIV.
