Enugu State Governor inspects facilities for 2026 National Sports Festival
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has pledged to deliver world-class facilities for the 23rd National Sports Festival, scheduled to take place from November 27 to December 11, 2026. The event, titled ‘Coal City Games,’ is a central part of the administration's strategy to promote tourism, investment, and social cohesion.
During an inspection of the Awgu Games Village, Governor Mbah noted that the site, which had been abandoned for years, is being transformed into a standard venue. Ongoing construction includes a 1,000-capacity hostel, indoor and outdoor courts, an eight-lane athletics track, and a FIFA-standard football pitch. The governor stated that the village is expected to be completed in less than two months.
Additionally, the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium is undergoing a comprehensive upgrade to meet FIFA standards. This reconstruction includes a new football pitch, improved spectator seating, new roofing, upgraded VIP and VVIP stands, and modernized player changing rooms. The project also features electronic access-control systems and new LCD scoreboards.
