Enugu State holds local government elections amid mixed turnout
The Enugu State local government elections, conducted by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) to elect chairmen and councillors across 17 local government areas, yielded mixed reports regarding participation and conduct.
While some political figures, including Governor Peter Mbah and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), described the exercise as largely peaceful and noted significant turnout in certain areas, other reports highlighted widespread voter apathy. Residents cited a lack of awareness and a belief that results are predetermined as reasons for staying away.
Logistical issues were also reported, including the late arrival of electoral materials at various polling units and the absence of original result sheets in some locations. The election utilized manual accreditation and thumb printing as BVAS technology was not deployed. ActionAid Nigeria deployed observers to monitor the process, expressing concerns regarding security in rural areas and the need for transparency in the collation process.
