Enugu State provides ₦77m to families returning from South Africa
The Enugu State Government has provided ₦77 million in financial support to 77 families consisting of 112 indigenes who returned to Nigeria following xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Governor Peter Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, distributed ₦1 million to each family during a ceremony at the International Conference Centre in Enugu.
Governor Mbah condemned the hostility directed at black African migrants in South Africa, noting that the attacks forced many Nigerians to abandon businesses, investments, and years of work. He described the funds as a ‘seed’ intended to assist with reintegration and rebuilding lives rather than full compensation for lost assets.
In collaboration with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), the state is currently profiling an additional 42 returnee families to determine further assistance.
