Enugu State suspends traditional ruler Williams Ezugwu

The Enugu State Government has suspended Williams Ezugwu, the traditional ruler of the Ibagwa Opi Ogbozalla Autonomous Community in Nsukka Local Government Area. The suspension, announced by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Charles Egumgbe, is based on alleged misconduct, including failure to follow the community’s code of conduct and failure to constitute a cabinet to assist in administration.

The move has sparked political controversy following Ezugwu’s recent reception of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), at his palace. While the state government has not officially linked the suspension to the visit, the NDC’s governorship candidate in Enugu, Chinyeaka Ohaa, has characterized the action as an encroachment on traditional institutions and constitutional freedoms.

Ohaa argued that penalizing a monarch for hosting high-profile guests violates the right to peaceful assembly and association guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution. He described the suspension as autocratic, suggesting it reduces traditional leaders to political appendages of the state executive.
