Enugu political violence: NDC supporters attacked during campaign flag-off
Political tensions have escalated in Enugu State, Nigeria, following violent attacks on supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) during a campaign flag-off for governorship candidate Chinyeaka Ohaa. The incidents occurred on October 10, 2026, at both the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the party’s state secretariat.
At the airport, security forces dispersed NDC members who were attempting to welcome Ohaa, leading to a confrontation. At the party secretariat, unidentified gunmen reportedly opened fire, injuring a man and damaging several vehicles. The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered a formal investigation into the shootings.
The Enugu state government has denied any involvement in the violence, suggesting the airport clash arose because the NDC failed to obtain necessary authorization from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
In response to the violence, NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi condemned the attacks, calling for the prosecution of those responsible and warning that political anarchy threatens the entire nation. Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of 16 candidates for the 2027 Enugu governorship election, which includes incumbent Governor Peter Mbah and Chinyeaka Ohaa.
