Enugu State University of Science and Technology imposes N500,000 fine for reckless driving after finals

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) announced a penalty of N500,000 for any student caught driving recklessly on or around the campus after completing final examinations. Registrar Ambrose Ugwu said the measure, taking effect on July 31, aims to curb accidents linked to celebratory driving that has caused repeated injuries.

Vehicles impounded for such offences will not be released until the fine is paid, and offenders will also face disciplinary sanctions under university regulations. The directive follows a resolution of the Enugu State House of Assembly and a memo from the state Commissioner for Education dated 20 December 2024. ESUT’s chief security officer and law‑enforcement agencies have been instructed to enforce the ban and ensure safety on campus.
