Envira faces legal pressure over waste management failures

The Public Ministry of the State of Amazonas (MPAM) has intensified its legal actions against the municipality of Envira and its Municipal Infrastructure Secretariat (Seminf) due to ongoing failures in solid waste management.

A recent inspection on September 10 revealed that environmental adequacy commitments were only partially met. Authorities discovered recent disposal of domestic waste on private land, creating sanitary risks for local residents. Furthermore, the municipality failed to secure the landfill perimeter, allowing unauthorized access by people and animals.

Specific failures include the lack of proper signage and secure areas for hospital waste, despite previous commitments made in July 2026. The municipality has also faced outstanding issues with the Amazonas Environmental Protection Institute (Ipaam) since 2022, including a lack of environmental licensing and delays in implementing a regularized sanitary landfill.
