Environment and lifestyle factors impact brain health
At the 56th Congress of the Italian Society of Neurology (SIN) in Florence, Leonardo Lopiano, a counselor for the organization, highlighted how environment, lifestyle, and social conditions significantly influence brain health.
Lopiano discussed the emerging concept of the ‘exposome,’ which refers to the sum of all biological, social, and cultural factors an individual is exposed to throughout their life. This concept integrates genetic profiles with how individuals react to environmental stimuli over time, potentially creating a predisposition to neurological diseases.
Research indicates that small particles from certain air pollutants can cross the blood-brain barrier. Once they reach the brain and nerve cells, they may trigger neuro-pathological processes, including chronic neuro-inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and alterations in synaptic transmission.
