Environment Canada launches targeted polygon weather alert system
Environment Canada has implemented a new polygon-based weather alert system specifically for thunderstorm and tornado warnings. Rolled out on August 11, the system allows forecasters to define precise geographic areas along a storm's expected path for the next 10 to 60 minutes. This targeted approach aims to reduce alert fatigue by ensuring notifications are sent only to those in the immediate path of a threat, rather than entire large regions.
Senior meteorologist Jonathan Bau noted that the system allows for multiple, even overlapping, warnings to track different threats within the same storm system. While thunderstorm and tornado warnings will use these precise polygons, other alerts such as heat or rain will continue to use broader, predetermined zones.
Weather specialist Jenny Hagan commented that the change is long overdue, noting that the technology has been used in the United States for approximately a decade. The new system provides more refined warnings by focusing on specific towns and communities rather than entire regions, though she noted that mobile phone alerts may still occasionally trigger for broader areas.
