Environmental and legal regulations for wood use in Poland

Authorities in Poland are highlighting the legal and environmental risks associated with using certain types of wood. Old railway sleepers are classified as hazardous waste because they are often treated with creosote, a toxic and carcinogenic substance containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Improper storage or use of these sleepers for fences or garden borders can contaminate soil and water, posing significant health risks, especially near wells or agricultural land. Mismanagement can lead to fines of up to 1 million PLN.

Separately, regulations regarding the self-harvesting of firewood from forests remain in effect. Under the 'samowyrób' system, individuals can legally collect wood—typically small branches or remnants from forest maintenance—at a lower cost by performing the labor themselves. This process requires coordination with a local forester, who designates the area and provides safety training. There is an annual limit of 30 cubic meters of wood per person per forest district under this system.
