Environmental and utility crime enforcement operations in Brazil
Authorities in Brazil have conducted several operations targeting environmental crimes and utility theft. In the rural area of Varjão, Goiás, a joint task force involving the Public Ministry of Goiás, environmental agencies, and Equatorial Goiás identified three points of electricity theft at a local development. The investigation uncovered irregular connections used to power a well pump, a kitchen, a carpentry shop, and a rest area. Those responsible were arrested in flagrante.
In Rondônia, the Public Ministry (MPRO) has utilized intelligence and integrated actions through its specialized environmental group, Gaema, to combat complex infractions. Following a period of high heat and poor air quality, operations such as 'Operação Temporã I' helped reduce heat spots in the Guajará-Mirim State Park by 80%. Additionally, 'Operação Mapinguari' resulted in 50 infringement notices and fines totaling R$ 35 million across 3,184 hectares. Other initiatives, including 'Operação Prometheus', 'Safe Green', and 'Aruanã', targeted illegal burning and unauthorized land occupation.
