Environmental and wildlife management issues reported in Italy
In Ancona, Italy, local police have dismantled four illegal waste dumps in the Pincio and Piano areas over a fifteen-day period. Authorities noted that the abandonment of refuse poses significant hygienic risks, including the presence of rats and the attraction of wild animals such as wolves and wild boars to urban zones. Officers from the Building-Environment section have identified and sanctioned those responsible through local surveillance.
In Puglia, Italy, Coldiretti Puglia has reported that wild boar overpopulation is causing approximately 2.4 million euros in damages annually. The organization criticized the delay in implementing management and containment plans within the Gargano and Alta Murgia National Parks, which were scheduled for activation in April 2026. While the Puglia region has adopted its own containment plan, the national parks remain in a state of bureaucratic delay, impacting crop safety and road security. A hunting season, including collective hunting with dogs, is set to begin on October 1st outside protected areas to address the population.
