Environmental authorities enforce sanctions in Panama and Mexico

Environmental authorities in Panama and Mexico have taken enforcement actions against separate entities for regulatory violations.

In Panama, the Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente) ordered the immediate halt of construction works at a hotel project in Playa Bijao, Antón. Inspections revealed the installation of storm and sanitary water collectors without necessary permits for work in riverbeds or concessions for wastewater discharge. Officials noted that the interventions could alter natural river behavior, cause erosion, and impact the marine-coastal ecosystem through sedimentation and water quality degradation.

In Mexico, the General Directorate of Municipal Ecology in Cancún carried out its first closure of the year regarding improper waste management. Following a citizen complaint, authorities inspected a site allegedly collecting vegetable oils and fats from businesses. While the operators held permits for transport and collection, they lacked authorization for storage. The case has been referred to the State Environmental Protection Attorney's Office for further regulation.
