Climate change impacts resource security and human displacement
Climate change is increasingly threatening global livelihoods and resource security. In Southeast and South Asia, rising sea levels, flooding, and droughts pose a severe risk of displacing tens of millions of people by mid-century. Experts suggest that investing in resilience and advanced technologies, such as AI-driven weather forecasting, is more cost-effective than managing humanitarian emergencies.
In Spain, the crisis manifests through decreasing water availability and increasing demand driven by demographic and industrial pressures. Companies like Veolia are focusing on ecological transformation through water, energy, and waste management solutions. This includes the development of 'ecofactories'—facilities that regenerate resources and improve infrastructure resilience to ensure the continuous supply of essential services.
Beyond physical resources, climate change is impacting public health. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified significant risks to mental health, including eco-anxiety and post-traumatic stress resulting from climate-related disasters. Additionally, environmental degradation is visible in the Pyrenees, where the Aneto glacier is facing extreme collapse, signaling broader desertification and hydrological instability in the region.
