Environmental complaints filed against Zlatna Reka Resources in Serbia

The environmental organization Polekol has filed complaints against Zlatna Reka Resources and its executives regarding suspected environmental violations on Rogozna mountain in southwestern Serbia. The company, a subsidiary of the Australian firm Strickland Metals, is conducting geological exploration for gold and base metals near Novi Pazar.

Local residents and the initiative ‘Ne damo Rogoznu’ have raised concerns regarding the impact of exploration on soil, water, and public health. Polekol alleges that the company failed to implement required environmental protection measures. While previous inspections identified irregularities and ordered corrective actions, activists claim these issues remain unresolved.

Polekol is calling for urgent testing of water and soil near unsecured ponds containing drilling mud and waste. Additionally, the organization is urging the Ministry of Mining and Energy to deny or revoke the company’s exploration permits, which are set to expire in early September. Zlatna Reka Resources has stated that the allegations are ‘completely unfounded’ and maintains that it has fulfilled all legal obligations.
