Environmental concerns in North Macedonia and maritime development in Albania
In North Macedonia, the ecological organization ‘Eko-Svest’ has called on the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning to urgently publish a draft law for soil protection and initiate public consultation. The organization warns that recent changes to the Law on Environment removed provisions for managing contaminated areas, leaving several sites without a proper legal framework for remediation. At least 13 to 16 historical contamination sites have been identified, including the former OHIS chemical complex in Skopje, lead and zinc smelters in Veles, and various mining locations such as Llojanas, Sasa, Zletovo, and Toranica.
Meanwhile, in Albania, the second edition of the Balkan Sea Fair was held at Marina Orikum. This three-day event brought together international investors, producers, and professionals to discuss the maritime industry and the blue economy. The fair aimed to foster cooperation between Albania and other European countries, with local officials highlighting the potential for Vlora to become a hub for elite tourism and water sports.
