Environmental concerns rise in Mexico over illegal logging and missing wildlife
In the State of Mexico, residents of Atlautla have formed the collective ‘Guardabosques Atlautla Unidos’ to combat illegal logging. The group has organized patrols to document the unauthorized felling of trees and has reported concerns regarding the illegal transport and processing of timber. They have submitted a formal petition, backed by community signatures, to state and federal environmental agencies, including PROBOSQUE and PROPAEM, requesting increased surveillance and protection of forest areas.
Separately, in Tihuatlán, Veracruz, administrators of the Akga’Pun Kitsis’Tanka Ecological Park have reported the disappearance of a jaguar following an inspection by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa). Park staff claim that federal inspectors entered the facility without staff supervision and dismantled enclosures during an operation to address alleged irregularities. While some animals have been returned to their enclosures, the current location of the jaguar remains unknown, leading to calls for an official search protocol.
