Environmental concerns rise over Peruvian lagoons

Environmental issues are threatening high-altitude lagoons in Peru. In the Huaraz province, members of the AGOEMA Guide Association have reported that the Willcacocha lagoon is being potentially drained. The group alleges that local community members are using heavy machinery to drain the waters, presumably to expand agricultural land. They have called for urgent intervention from the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office and regional tourism authorities to prevent damage to the ecosystem and local tourism.

Simultaneously, in Huanta, the reduction of water levels in the Razuhuillca lagoons has raised alarms. This decline is attributed to a combination of scarce rainfall and recent forest fires in the high mountain areas. The shrinking water levels threaten the water supply necessary for local populations, agriculture, and livestock. While technical evaluations are still required to determine the exact magnitude of the retreat, the situation highlights growing ecological instability in the region.
