Environmental concerns rise over Portuguese mining projects

Environmental organizations and local government in Portugal are raising concerns regarding mining projects and their ecological impacts.

In the Beira Baixa region, the Quercus environmental association and MiningWatch Portugal have issued an unfavorable opinion regarding the renewal of the environmental license for the Panasqueira mines. They argue that current documentation is insufficient to assess geotechnical and seismic stability risks for tailings dams, as well as the capacity of water treatment plants during heavy rainfall. The groups are calling for a clear plan to resolve historical environmental liabilities and ensure a monitored recovery process.

Separately, the Óbidos Municipal Council has expressed formal opposition to a proposed kaolin and clay mining project in the Serra d'El-Rei parish. Although the concession is located in the Peniche municipality, Óbidos officials warn that the open-pit mine, managed by Motamineral — Minerais Industriais, S. A., will cause negative regional consequences. Concerns include high water consumption, soil degradation, loss of biodiversity, and irreversible landscape changes.
