Environmental conservation efforts face urban growth in Mexico
The Sierra de Zapalinamé natural protected area marks 30 years of conservation efforts by Profauna, though the region faces significant challenges from urban expansion. Sergio Merines Gómez, director of Profauna, identified urban growth as a primary threat to the reserve. Investigations have documented the loss of hundreds of hectares due to housing developments and changes in land use, including the construction of high-density residential projects in areas previously intended for conservation.
In a separate environmental effort in Monterrey, the municipal government conducted a reforestation initiative at Parque Lago. In coordination with organizations such as Reforestamos México and Cadena Comercial OXXO, volunteers and municipal staff planted 120 native trees. The project aims to strengthen green spaces, enhance biodiversity, and mitigate the heat island effect within the city.
