Environmental conservation faces legislative and budget hurdles in Mexico and Argentina

In Mexico, Deputy Octavio Ocampo has proposed a reform to Article 191 of the State Law for Environmental Conservation and Sustainability. The initiative seeks to formalize environmental co-responsibility by involving civil society, indigenous communities, and rural producers in the conservation, restoration, and maintenance of degraded ecosystems.

In Argentina, the 2027 national budget proposal allocates only 4.07% of the funds required by law for the protection of native forests. According to Manuel Jaramillo, director of Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina, the proposed allocation of 24,668 million pesos falls significantly short of the 606,304 million pesos mandated by law. This funding gap limits the ability of provinces to monitor deforestation and provides insufficient resources for the restoration of illegally cleared or burned areas.
