Environmental conservation initiatives focus on Isola del Giglio and Lake Varese
Environmental protection efforts are underway in Italy through local educational programs and scientific associations. In Isola del Giglio, the “SCOGLIO PULITO” project, sponsored by the Municipality of Isola del Giglio and the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, held its second series of school meetings. Led by Park guide Marina Aldi, the sessions engaged primary and middle school students in discussions regarding territory care, waste management, and the impact of abandoned items such as hunting cartridges and old dog shelters.
In the Varese region, the association Save Lake Varese, founded by Dorothea Dietz, is working to address the ecological fragility of Lake Varese. The organization focuses on combating eutrophication, pollution, and sewage system issues through scientific research, limnology, and infrastructure monitoring. Dietz, drawing on experiences from Austria, emphasizes that recovering the ecosystem requires technical data, institutional collaboration, and targeted investments to manage nutrient levels and oxygen depletion in the lake bed.
