Environmental enforcement actions in Mozambique and Brazil

In Mozambique, 29 forest and wildlife rangers from Banhine National Park have completed a three-week intensive training program designed to enhance biodiversity protection. The training, supported by the Peace Parks Foundation and conducted by the Southern African Wildlife College, focused on patrol techniques, operational planning, map reading, and radio communication. The initiative, led by the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC), aims to improve technical and operational capacities for ecosystem conservation.

In Brazil, the Federal Police and Ibama launched Operation Saldo Zero to dismantle an illegal timber exploitation and trade network in southwest Pará. Authorities executed search and seizure warrants at sawmills in Anapu and a timber yard in São Domingos do Araguaia. Investigators discovered that several targeted establishments were operating without licenses or despite being under embargo. A significant discrepancy was noted in the Sisflora system, where some businesses reported “saldo zero” (zero balance) of forest products while maintaining large volumes of logs and active processing operations. The investigation is also looking into the illegal extraction of timber from federal public forests.
