Environmental funding gaps highlighted in Mexico and Argentina
Global and regional discussions highlight a significant imbalance in environmental funding. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) State of Finance for Nature 2026 report, for every dollar invested in protecting or restoring nature, 30 dollars are directed toward activities that contribute to its deterioration.
At the NAT5 Live Marketplace 2026 in Mexico, experts emphasized the urgent need to increase investment in ecosystem recovery. Héctor Martínez Galindo, co-founder of Nat&Am, warned that current reinvestment rates must multiply to avoid crossing irreversible natural thresholds. The Planetary Health Check 2025 report indicates that seven of nine planetary boundaries, including climate change and biodiversity, have already been exceeded.
In Argentina, concerns have been raised regarding the 2027 National Budget proposal. An analysis by Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina suggests the government plans to allocate only $39 per month per hectare to protect native forests. This amount represents approximately 4.07% of the minimum legal requirement established by the 2007 Forest Law, which mandates that the National Fund for the Enrichment and Conservation of Native Forests receive at least 0.3% of the national budget.
