Environmental groups challenge infrastructure safety in Germany and Austria

Environmental organizations are raising alarms regarding safety and contamination risks in two separate European infrastructure projects.

In Germany, BUND and Nabu are criticizing the planning process for a flood protection basin in the Lossetal near Helsa. The groups argue that the current data regarding potential toxic concentrations in the soil is insufficient. They suggest that residues from a former explosives factory could be mobilized during construction, potentially polluting the Losse river. The organizations are calling for systematic soil investigations before construction begins next year.

In Austria, the Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry, Regions and Water Management (BMLUK) has responded to criticism from the WWF regarding the Gepatsch reservoir in Kaunertal. The WWF has called for an independent climate risk analysis, citing concerns that melting permafrost could destabilize rock faces and trigger dangerous flood waves. The Ministry maintains that the reservoir's operational safety has already been reviewed by experts and that ongoing environmental impact assessments are designed to evaluate such risks.
