Environmental groups denounce tree removal and pruning practices in Mexico and Spain

In Playa del Carmen, Mexico, residents of Zazil-Ha are demanding a halt to the removal of two trees aged over 80 years. Local resident David Chávez alleges that the decision to intervene, previously deemed unnecessary by arboriculture specialists, may instead favor a condominium development by Grupo Icasa. Residents claim that municipal authorities have not transparently provided the necessary permits for the removal or relocation of the trees and have noted that over one thousand residents have signed against the real estate project.

In Ceuta, Spain, the association Daubma has filed a formal complaint regarding drastic pruning of mature trees in Plaza de Azcárate. The organization claims that severe crown reductions and structural cuts are being performed without individualized technical diagnoses. Daubma reported that the removal of a large branch revealed advanced internal rot in one specimen, raising concerns about the long-term management of the city's urban forestry and the potential for irreversible loss of natural heritage.
