Environmental groups file legal actions against infrastructure and mining projects in Mexico and Peru
In Mexico, the Salvemos Cuyutlán collective has filed an injunction to halt the expansion of the Port of Manzanillo in Colima. The group argues the project will destroy mangroves, disrupt the lagoon's ecosystem, and harm local fishing and salt-producing communities. Spokesperson Yerania Valencia noted that ongoing dredging operations act like “giant vacuums,” potentially releasing heavy metals from sediments and altering tidal flows.
In Peru, the Colectivo Mollendinos has filed a criminal complaint with the Environmental Crimes Prosecutor's Office in Arequipa. The complaint targets the company COIMSER SAC and legal representative Carlos Alarcón of Roca Zeta EIRL for the alleged extraction of clay and aggregates in the Lomas de Yuta, a fragile ecosystem. The collective also accuses Islay provincial mayor Richard Ale Cruz and environmental officials of negligence for allowing extraction to continue for five months in a protected area.
