Environmental groups oppose motocross event on Catona beach

Environmental organizations, including Legambiente Calabria, WWF Calabria, and the Touring Club Italiano, have filed a formal complaint to block a motocross event scheduled for October 31 and November 1 on the Catona seafront in Reggio Calabria. The event, organized by Moto Club Sand Riders, involves a 1,500-meter track set directly on the beach.

Critics argue the event poses significant environmental risks due to its proximity to the Catona Beach Special Area of Conservation (ZSC IT9350183), part of the European Natura 2000 network. This protected site safeguards coastal habitats, including annual vegetation and mobile embryonic dunes. Regional conservation measures specifically prohibit motor vehicle transit on these shorelines to protect dune systems from mechanical pressure and noise.

The associations are calling on the Municipality of Reggio Calabria and relevant authorities to verify the legality of the event and the validity of any issued permits, requesting the suspension or revocation of authorizations if environmental regulations are being violated.
