Environmental groups sue Trump administration over fuel economy rollback
A coalition of environmental organizations has filed a lawsuit in federal appeals court against the Trump administration over the relaxation of vehicle fuel economy standards. The petition challenges a decision made on September 28 to lower Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, which sets the efficiency requirements for new passenger cars and light trucks.
The new rule lowers the 2031 fleetwide target to approximately 34.9 mpg, a significant reduction from the 50.4 mpg projected under the previous administration. Environmental groups argue this rollback will lead to increased pollution and higher gasoline consumption. According to the Department of Energy, the change could increase gas prices by 76 cents per gallon.
The administration has defended the decision, stating that the adjustments are intended to improve vehicle affordability and increase consumer choice. The lawsuit names Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Administrator Jonathan Morrison as defendants.
