Environmental groups urge bans on fireworks in Italy

Environmental advocates in Italy are calling for restrictions on fireworks displays due to fire risks and harm to wildlife. In the Caltanissetta province, the WWF Sicilia Centrale has issued a formal warning to the mayors of Bompensiere, Marianopoli, Montedoro, and Sutera following the authorization of pyrotechnic shows during religious festivals.

The WWF noted that local authorities have a duty to prevent fire ignition and spread. They also highlighted the negative impact of loud noises on wild, domestic, and livestock animals, which can cause disorientation, flight, and increased risks to road safety. The association has requested intervention from the Prefect to implement province-wide measures.

In Messina, local criticism has been directed at the scheduling of fireworks displays. Critics argue that such events ignore the dangers to coastal environments and wildlife, specifically noting the distress caused to feral cat colonies and domestic pets. Opponents suggest that these displays are a waste of resources and advocate for quieter, more respectful alternatives.
