Proper disposal methods for used cooking oil
Proper disposal of used cooking oil is essential to prevent environmental damage and household plumbing issues. Experts warn that pouring oil down the sink can contaminate vast amounts of water; for instance, a single liter of oil can contaminate 1,000 liters of water. Additionally, fats and oils can solidify as they cool, causing significant blockages in domestic drainage systems.
To manage waste correctly, it is recommended to let the oil cool and then pour it into a sealed container, such as a glass jar or the original plastic bottle, before placing it in the regular household trash. For smaller amounts, using paper towels to wipe pans is an effective method. Some organizations also accept used oil for recycling into biodiesel. In certain regions, used oil can be taken to designated collection points or 'puntos limpios' for proper processing.
