Environmental initiatives focus on forest management and tree awareness in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, local environmental initiatives are focusing on forest management and public awareness regarding the benefits of trees.
In the Stedumerbos, Staatsbosbeheer is conducting forestry work by selectively felling groups of poplars marked with orange dots. To create a more resilient and diverse forest capable of withstanding pests and diseases, new trees including oak, birch, lime, hornbeam, and sweet cherry will be planted in the resulting clearings. The harvested wood will be repurposed for products such as coffin wood, fiberboard, and paper, while branches will be used for energy production.
Meanwhile, in the municipality of Maashorst, ten trees have been fitted with posters as part of the European EUTreeTag awareness campaign. These posters display specific environmental data, such as the amount of oxygen produced, carbon stored, and rainwater captured by individual trees. The initiative, which involves municipalities across twelve European countries, aims to highlight the vital roles trees play in providing shade, cooling, and air filtration.
