Environmental initiatives target marine debris in Japan

Environmental initiatives focused on marine debris are expanding through corporate partnerships and youth-oriented summits in Japan. Umisakura recently collaborated with Prada Japan for a beach cleaning event involving approximately 30 to 40 employees and their families. The event included educational sessions on the current state of ocean waste and activities such as plastic waste art.

Additionally, the Beach Clean Summit in Ishigaki is scheduled to take place from December 11 to 13, 2026, across Ishigaki, Kohama, and Taketomi islands. Organized by a consortium including Shimanuwa and Jomon Kikaku, the summit aims to provide free participation slots for high school and university students to reduce economic barriers to environmental education. A crowdfunding campaign for this initiative successfully reached 135% of its goal, raising 405,000 yen to support student involvement in coastal cleaning and discussions with international practitioners.
