Environmental investigations launched in Slovakia and Hungary

Environmental investigations are underway regarding two separate incidents in Slovakia and Hungary. In Slovakia, the Environmental Inspection (SIŽP) has filed two reports with the prosecutor's office against the Feketenyék landfill near Galanta. This follows a major fire that occurred last April, which burned for weeks. Firefighters reported that the fire was caused by spontaneous combustion, where waste ignited due to heat without an external spark. Extinguishing efforts continue as crews manage recurring fire pockets, and the operator is required to use installed equipment to prevent new ignitions.

In Hungary, authorities have launched an investigation into the Danube River near Almásfüzitő after reports of a brownish, foul-smelling substance mixing with the water. The Federation of Fishing Associations in Komárom-Esztergom County (KEMHESZ) initiated the inquiry following reports from anglers. While there is a possibility that organic matter from local marshlands is causing the discoloration, laboratory testing and water sampling are currently underway to determine the exact composition of the substance and its impact on the river's ecosystem.
