Environmental investigations launched into fish die-offs in Brazil and Portugal

Environmental investigations are underway following reports of mass fish deaths in separate incidents in Brazil and Portugal.

In Alto Paraguai, Brazil, a mass die-off of various fish species in the Paraguay River led to the preventive suspension of water intake, affecting approximately 70% of the urban population. Investigations are targeting Suinobras Alimentos, a company led by Reinaldo Gomes de Morais. Reports from environmental authorities and forensic experts indicated collapsed biodigesters, damaged structures, and leaking pipelines, resulting in high concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen in the water.

In Vila Real, Portugal, the GNR (National Republican Guard) is investigating the appearance of dead fish in the Corgo River near Corgo Park. Authorities are analyzing whether the event was caused by a pollutant discharge or a significant reduction in the river's flow. Water and fish samples have been collected to determine the cause.
