Environmental issues reported at Copacabana and Pipa Beach

Environmental concerns have surfaced in two different Brazilian coastal regions. In Rio de Janeiro, technicians from the State Institute of the Environment (Inea) inspected Copacabana Beach after a strip of dark sand appeared near Post 5 following recent rainfall. While the cause remains unidentified, similar incidents occurred in 2022 and late 2024. The utility company Águas do Rio stated that the current episode is not related to the sewage system, which they report is functioning normally.

In Rio Grande do Norte, the judiciary has ordered a new environmental expert assessment for an inn located in the Pipa Beach area of Tibau do Sul. The evaluation, to be conducted by Ibama, aims to clarify the environmental characteristics of the land and the possibility of area recovery. The decision follows a civil public action dating back to 2006 regarding construction in a permanent preservation area. The judge noted that a previous 2016 report contained contradictory conclusions regarding vegetation suppression and legal compliance.
