Environmental Justice Foundation report finds high health risks in 92% of plastic chemicals
An investigation by the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) has revealed that 92.8% of the chemicals analyzed in common plastic products pose a high risk to human health. The report, titled ‘Poison Plastics: How Chemicals in Everyday Plastics Are Harming Your Health’, examines five major categories of daily-use items.
Findings show high percentages of high-risk substances across various sectors: approximately 92% in food-contact plastics, 89% in children's toys, and 93% in textiles and clothing. Household items—including water bottles, kitchen utensils, and office supplies—exceeded 92% risk, while hygiene and medical products, such as dental floss and medication packaging, showed similar levels.
Researchers noted that the issue is compounded by a lack of sufficient data for many chemicals used in plastic manufacturing, making it difficult to determine their full extent of danger. While the findings do not imply every individual object is toxic, the identified chemicals are overwhelmingly associated with serious health risks, including cancer, infertility, and hormonal disruptions.
