Environmental Justice Foundation report finds high health risks in household plastics

A new report by the London-based Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) reveals that nearly 93% of known plastic chemicals used in common household and personal care products pose a high risk to human health. The investigation, titled ‘Poison Plastics: How Chemicals in Everyday Plastics are Harming Your Health’, analyzed exposure across five major categories of daily-use plastics.

Key findings include that 92% of chemicals in food-contact plastics, 89% of chemicals in children's toys, and 93% of chemicals in textiles and clothing are considered high-risk. Additionally, 92% of common household items—ranging from bottled water and kitchenware to office supplies—and 93% of hygiene and medical plastics were found to contain dangerous chemicals.

Lead author Naima Fenderl noted that these chemicals could lead to cancer, genetic changes, and various forms of toxicity, including endocrine and reproductive issues. Dr. Philip Landrigan of Boston College highlighted the report's ability to show how these substances infiltrate daily life. However, the report also noted a significant data gap, stating that 80% of the 3,552 chemicals analyzed lack sufficient data to fully determine their toxicity or exposure risks.
