Environmental regulations in Czechia and Slovakia impose strict fines

New regulations and existing environmental laws in Czechia and Slovakia impose significant penalties for unauthorized activities in forests and on private land.

In Czechia, a recent amendment to the Forest Act has doubled fines for illegal parking near forests. Drivers found parking without permission—even without signage—can face fines of up to 10,000 CZK. If the driver cannot be identified, the vehicle owner may be held liable for up to 100,000 CZK. These rules aim to prevent the obstruction of emergency services and forestry machinery. Enforcement is conducted by both the police and forest guards.

In Slovakia, strict rules govern tree removal and land use. Property owners must obtain permission to fell trees that exceed specific trunk circumference limits, which vary between 60 cm and 90 cm depending on whether the land is in a built-up area. Unauthorized cutting or improper management of shrubs can result in fines reaching nearly 10,000 EUR. Exceptions are granted for removing invasive species, replacing fruit trees, or addressing trees that pose an immediate danger to life or property.
