Environmental risks and economic opportunities in climate and pest management

Agricultural and environmental experts are highlighting the dual challenges of invasive species and the interconnected crises of climate change and air pollution.

In the agricultural sector, the intensification of global trade and climate-driven environmental shifts have increased the risk of invasive pests entering Europe. Species such as Spodoptera frugiperda, already identified in Romania, and Popillia japonica, spreading in northern Italy, are approaching the Carpathian Basin. Experts emphasize that proactive, field-level monitoring and precise identification through microscopic examination are essential to protect crops and forests.

Simultaneously, a new assessment by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) suggests that coordinated action against climate change and air pollution can drive economic growth. The report indicates that integrated policies could yield an extra economic benefit equivalent to 0.2 percent of global GDP. By addressing both issues through 25 identified solutions across six sectors, every dollar invested could return approximately 15 dollars when accounting for improved quality of life and reduced health costs related to respiratory diseases and heat stress.
