Environmental risks rise in Toluca as Spain pursues climate pact

In Toluca, Mexico, the environmental organization Eco Urban has warned of increased seismic risks and ground subsidence due to the opening of new water wells. A technical diagnosis indicates that the overexploitation of groundwater is causing irreversible compaction of sediments. The Valle de Toluca aquifer has been under an indefinite ban by Conagua for 61 years and faces an annual deficit of 128.7 hectometers cubed, despite having over 1,300 active wells.

In Spain, Laura Martín Murillo, commissioner for the Water Cycle and Ecosystem Restoration at MITECO, expressed optimism regarding the State Pact against the Climate Emergency. Following a summer of significant wildfires and previous seasons of heavy flooding, Murillo stated that the pact is increasingly viewed as a collective societal proposal rather than a government initiative, involving various sectors including scientists, farmers, and unions.
