Environmental suspensions in Chad and detention center protests in France
In N’Djaména, Chad, the Ministry of Environment, Fisheries and Sustainable Development has ordered the temporary suspension of three mat manufacturing companies located in Lamadji. The companies—Société de fabrication des nattes en plastique, Société tchadienne des nattes, and Société Perfection-Environnement—were found to be in violation of environmental regulations. Specific infractions include the absence of environmental and social impact studies, poor waste management, failure to meet hygiene and safety standards, and risks of soil and water pollution. The ministry also cited noise and odor nuisances, as well as the emission of harmful substances.
In Nantes, France, the Ligue des droits de l’homme (LDH) and nine other organizations are contesting the proposed construction of a 140-place administrative detention center (CRA) in the Zac du Champ de manoeuvre. The project seeks to be classified as a project of general interest to bypass restrictions on destroying wetlands and protected species. Ecological inventories conducted between 2024 and 2025 revealed the site is a forested wetland with moderate to high ecological stakes for local fauna. During a public consultation, 961 out of 1,022 contributions were expressed in opposition to the project.
