Environmental threats impact infrastructure in Peru and Iguazú Falls
Authorities in Peru and South American national parks are responding to environmental threats to infrastructure. In Miraflores, the municipality has issued an alert regarding coastal erosion along the Costa Verde. The situation escalated after a utility pole slid into the sand at La Pampilla beach, exposing the vulnerability of the roadway and nearby structures. Officials stated they have been warning of this deterioration since 2023, noting that erosion has undermined pedestrian crossings and safety barriers. The municipality has requested intervention from EMAPE to address more than seven high-risk points along the route, which sees approximately 50,000 vehicles daily.
Simultaneously, in the Iguazú Falls region, authorities are managing rising river levels. In Brazil’s Iguaçu National Park, workers have been seen dismantling walkway protections to mitigate flood damage. On the Argentine side, Iguazú National Park utilizes a system of retractable walkways designed to reduce water resistance during high flows. In extreme cases, sections are detached from their supports to protect concrete foundations. These preventative measures follow significant flooding events, such as those in late 2023, which required extensive technical inspections and repairs to the Garganta del Diablo circuit.
