Enya: The story behind the 9/11 mourning anthem ‘Only Time’

Twenty-five years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, Enya’s song ‘Only Time’ remains closely associated with the event as an unofficial global anthem of mourning. The track, originally from the album ‘A Day Without Rain’, initially saw limited success before being used in the film ‘Sweet November’ and as a musical element in the sitcom ‘Friends’.

The song's connection to 9/11 was solidified when New York financial broker Steve Golding created a video montage of the victims set to the music. After CNN broadcast the clip, the song gained widespread recognition as a source of comfort. Following this period of intense association, the Irish musician has largely withdrawn from public life, with her last major public appearance occurring at the 2017 Grammy Awards.
