Enzo Bitonti, veteran Rai cinematographer, dies at 93

Enzo Bitonti, a prominent cinematographer and director of photography for Rai, has passed away at the age of 93 in his hometown of Tricase, Italy. Over a career spanning more than forty years, Bitonti served as a visual witness to many of the most significant global events of the late 20th century.

After training at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, Bitonti joined Rai in 1960. He worked alongside iconic television figures such as Alberto Manzi, Edmondo Bernacca, and Enzo Tortora. His career eventually transitioned from domestic television to high-stakes international reportage.

Bitonti documented numerous conflicts and political shifts, including the 1967 Six-Day War, the Yom Kippur War, and the fall of the Berlin Wall. His work took him to the Middle East, Africa—including Rhodesia and Uganda—and the United States. In Italy, his lens captured significant social and criminal issues, ranging from the 'Anonima Sequestri' to the activities of the 'ndrangheta.
