Enzo Fernandez shines in Manchester City derby debut
Enzo Fernandez made a notable debut for Manchester City in a 1-0 derby victory against Manchester United, despite City playing with ten men for nearly 70 minutes following Phil Foden’s first-half red card.
Fernandez, who joined City from Chelsea for £125 million, demonstrated significant defensive and offensive contributions. Statistically, he covered over 10.25km, recorded more sprints than any other midfielder on the pitch, and led the team in interceptions and duels won. Offensively, he created more big chances than the entire Manchester United squad, producing one major opportunity while United produced none.
Erling Haaland scored the winning goal in the 60th minute, though the goal was subject to VAR scrutiny regarding Fernandez’s position in the buildup. The referee later acknowledged an “error of judgment” regarding the VAR protocol during the review process.
